Adjusting to home

Mom was reflecting today on how much she enjoyed her stay in the hospital. She said she felt really protected and safe. The doctors and nurses are very caring and kind, and Mom had few decisions to make. At the hospital, they took care of all her meds, brought her food when it was time to eat, and answered any questions or concerns. And she had lots of visitors!

At home, a lot more is up to Mom. She needs to decide what to eat, remember when to take her meds, and decide when a symptom needs more attention. There is also all the normal day-to-day tasks involved with running a household.

Deciding what to eat is a big deal. The nutritionist met with Mom and Dad before they left the hospital, and gave them four pages of notes on things to eat and not to eat. Basically, Mom still needs to be on a liquid diet, adding in other approved foods, but putting them through a blender first. She is particularly to avoid stringy things like celery, which would wrap around a bowel obstruction and build up more of a blockage. Eating soft and liquid food should keep things moving.

So you can pray for wisdom as they adjust to this new routine. When you've just been in the hospital, coming home can be a little intimidating. So far, it is going well! Mom and Dad are a great team.
